The 2nd Annual Sustainable Living Fair
Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 9am – 4pm
Mill Race Park

Once you have crossed the finish line, enjoy the race vendors and activities. And just a few steps away, take in the many vendors, demonstrations and activities at the Sustainable Living Fair.

Information on scheduled musicians, food tents and activities is coming soon. To visit the SLF web page, click here.

The purpose of the Sustainable Living Fair is to communicate the importance of “living green” and living sustainably by saving money and natural resources now and for future generations. Vendors presenting their sustainable products and concepts, earth-friendly products, local products and produce, personal wellness, recycling ideas and information, and sustainable transportation will be participating to help educate the citizens of Columbus and the rest of south central Indiana on how to make their lives more sustainable.

2009 Speakers scheduled to appear include: Andy Mahler of the Heartwood Forest Alliance, Keith Johnson of Permaculture Activist, and Rhonda Baird of the Indiana Forest Alliance

The plans for a Columbus Sustainable Living Fair were started in 2007 by a few members of the Winding Waters Group of the Sierra Club.  We discussed the idea with Energy Matters Community Coalition and began planning.  On September 27, 2008 we held our first small Sustainable Living Fair as part of the Driftwood Valley Music Festival.  We received a lot of positive feedback from vendors and people in the community so we felt this was something important and began planning for the following year.  We will include speakers, musicians, and possibly a movie tent in 2009.

4th ANNUAL IRON POUR
hosted by

The Columbus Area Arts Council presents the 2009 open iron pour on Friday, September 25 beginning at 5pm in Mill Race Park. This is free and open to the public.

Prepapation for the Iron Pour begins earlier when the head of the iron pour crew and other artists arrive.  This preparation includes retrieving and breaking up 2000 pounds of casing iron, preparing the coke (refined coal), setting up the kiln, building the casting surface and setting up a workshop area.

The public is encouraged to observe and/or join in the set up.

The iron pour artists plan to conduct three community workshops at Mill Race Park, which will be open to the public.

The community workshops take place on Wednesday and Thursday. A final workshop will be held from on Friday afternoon. Prior to the workshops, the artists will have prepared 100 “scratch blocks” (about the size of a brick) for individuals to use to create a sculptural relief image. The scratch blocks are made of sand that is held together with resin and people can scratch or carve a design into the sand that will later be cast in iron. Simple metal engraving tools will be provided. There will be a charge to participants of $12 for each block. Artists and volunteers will be on hand to assist the participants in each step of the process. Bricks sell out fast so be sure to make your reservation early.

Nearby elementary schools are encouraged to walk over to the pour site during the school day on Thursday. Please call 812.376.2539 to reserve your time slot.

On Friday at 5pm, the public is invited as the kiln is fired and the iron pour begins. Every 20 minutes 100 pounds of molten metal is drained into ladles and fed into the tiles by the experienced foundry artists/technicians. After the tiles are allowed to cool, the molds are broken and the final products (all original work by community participants) will be revealed. Finally, the last pour of the evening will be a spectacular, large open iron pour demonstration after dark.

For further information about the iron pour or the workshops, call 812.376.2539.
